Knowledge of Positive Cologuard Test Improves Colonoscopy Performance, Mayo Clinic Study Shows

By Ali Skahan

Colonoscopies: not fun to talk about, even less fun to experience. But they’re a necessary part of adulting. If you’re unfamiliar with Cologuard, it’s a Mayo Clinic at-home colon cancer screening kit that may help make an uncomfortable process just a little bit easier. Mayo Clinic research has even found that knowledge of a positive Cologuard test may improve colonoscopy performance and quality. So if you’re due for a colonoscopy and dreading it (because let’s be honest, who isn’t?), look into some of the modern advances that may make prepping for your appointment a little less scary.

Is Cologuard test any better than the Fecal Occult test my doctor prescribed for me? My test was positive for blood, I was not surprised since I have fissures. I have not had a colonoscopy.

Hi @elainelowry, welcome to Connect! Since I am not a doctor, I won’t be able to attest to whether one is necessarily better than the other, but it would be great topic to bring up to your doctor. Both tests are meant to detect the same thing, but it appears that recent research on Cologuard can potentially detect more and has the convenience of being done at home. Here’s some information on the fecal occult blood test in case you’d like to compare it to the Cologuard article: http://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/fecal-occult-blood-test/basics/definition/prc-20014429

I also want to let you know that Mayo Connect has a Digestive Health group (http://mayocl.in/29oOtsM) that would be great for you to join so you can talk with other users who have had similar experiences. Here are two threads you may find helpful to skim:
