YOU DO NOT.....DEFINE WHO I AM!

People that live with mental illnesses are not simply reduced to a diagnostic label found in a text book nor by people who have difficulties looking beyond the surface
Living with a mental illness does not automatically equally incompetence, a low IQ, poor boundaries, laziness, malingering, difficult, dishonest nor unworthy or undeserving of life's wonderful and fulfilling achievements
It's important for people living with mental illnesses to realize and be cognizant that the federal government provides funding resources so that states in the U.S. can provide much needed services that will enhance the lives of the people being discused.
Furthermore, if we did not exist, just as if diabetes, the facilities, the funding nor the jobs would exist
For years, I have been exposed to a way of thinking towards those living with mental illness that conflicts with my personal and academically influenced belief system.
For almost 2 decades, I have witnessed how human beings are reduced to pathology instead of individualism.
I am not defined, solely, on genetics nor a label and neither are reader's.
I am a culmination of: my culture, belief system, experiences, accomplishments and yes some challenges
Interestingly, most of the human population are defined by a host of contributing factors …not just one!
So, why does it appear that when it comes to mental illnesses some forget, whether intentional or not, that we are somehow incapable of contributing to every aspect of everyday living?
Einstein, former presidents, van gough, super stars and even professionals working in a variety of fields have been known to live with mental illnesses but are they famous for an illness or the contributions they have made to society? Contributions!
Yet, for the common person, it appears that more and more others have been trying to box us into one category and I fully disagree with these impossed categorical limitations = defining who we are!
Please, no matter where you are in life do not allow others to tell you who you are nor what you're worth.
I, vividly recall when I graduated with an MSW a colleague telling me to my face "you were never meant to be a social worker". I could not believe what I was hearing let alone feel so demoralized especially since I already had the job title because my colleagues with the same titles only had undergraduate degrees, where doing social work but I, the ill one, with an advanced degree was never meant? ????
I cannot respect people as such. They are a disappointment to human kind.
However, regardless of the sting and the sad reality that employer's discriminate against us I stand firm!
I am worthy of everything I aspire to do and my illness does not, nor, will it ever define who I am and neither will an insensitive and biased person
We may not always feel great but we have names, careers, goals, relationships, and illnesses but this is representative of the human population.
Let's not become immune to labels and always remember that no matter what the circumstances if we respect others we should expect the same.
In solidarity against stigma, oppression and discrimination :+)

Being defined by anyone other than yourself is unacceptable. And, even we, depending on how we feel, can put ourselves down because we are struggling. Let's try really hard to define ourselves as beautiful human beings with good hearts who need to be treated as such. Labels are demoralizing and what we need is to uplift our souls and dream/hope that life has to improve.

As a newcomer to this blog, I am just reading this post for the first time. Your description of the human condition in regards to the sufferage of things gone arry with those of us with mental health problems has never been more eloquently put than in this post. As one of the millions of people out here struggling with mental health each and every day…YOU have given me a new perspective in how I view myself and my disease process. Thank you so much.

When I return to work on 9/8/2012, after 1 year away, I am defining myself as a fighter that refused to cave in to my illness and got myself back up from the ground to continue striving for a better life… we will all do this at our pace.

Hi Piglit,
I think my voice is about to get a little louder. People, bullies, evil likes to project their issues onto those that they feel are vulnerable. The worst thing you can do is tell anyone your inner most secrets as was done over 11 years ago and then have that person use it aginst you to hurt you ever since. There is no such thing as confidentiality in the healthcare system and when you submit medical forms everyone has access to them and then they decide to really dig their evil poison into you… I am proud of who I am despite what I have been through because I have stood tall, held my ground and shared my story. The way to heal is to allow genuine people into our lives and Piglit you have been wonderful…

They try to define us negatively because we are bright and know the difference between equality and respect vs. sabotage and cruelty… Bullies or people who abuse their power do not like it when a strong person stands up to them.
It will never stop unless we all tell our stories and change policies, laws and stricter accountability.

I say that no one can define whom we are but they do especially those with a little power. The key is to not own what other's define you as because that is their opinion filled with biases, insecurities, transference issues…etc.
Although, this type of behavior is hurtful, we just can't allow another person to tell us who we are and what we are worth…

After meeting and getting to know so many wonderful people here, I'm so proud of this discussion because we are all living proof that mental illness does not define us.
I feel blessed to have met individuals who are: bright, articulate, kind, jovial, expressive, caring, sensitive, accepting, passionate, hard worker's and so much more!!!!
You should all be so proud of yourselves because you have proven that labels are WRONG

As I read this discussion, I have to admit that although I know best who I am, being lied about or judged really hurts. It does make one question who they really are…that would give others the opportunity to define, label and judge me with such contempt. My mother thinks that people who feel threatened or are reminded of someone from their personal life can cause someone to project those negative feelings onto another. I'm always trying to figure all this suffering out. Maybe my mom is right or maybe some just get a kick out of hurting other's.
What do you think?

Defining, labeling, targeting, and misleading are so hurtful. I'm the only one that can define who I am and what I stand for. I'm a good person living in a society with many social issues that should have been eradicated decades ago.

As I read some of my reference letters going back to 1992, it's difficult to understand why some have the audacity to slander my work ethic and character. I'm still trying to sort out how I'm portrayed by some with a hidden agenda in a negative light but my references say that I go above and beyond.
This is another topic that makes me question "why?".
How can anyone try to portray a false picture of another? It really hurts when people believe the abuser and not the person being mobbed. Maybe just maybe I'll be able to ask soon.

Thanks

piglit May 13, 2012 at 5:16 pm1 Like
You wont have to report this because it will go before the courts and all be submitted with the evidence that you have provided. They will then direct you in the direction of then lodging a civil claim. You may not need to go down this avenue as the court as I'm sure will rule your way.Takecare Piglit

Hi Friends,
Can you give me examples of defamation of character?
Thanks
Roxie -
piglit May 13, 2012 at 1:28 am1 Like
HI Rox, defamation of character is when intentionally false statements are stated intended to damage a person's reputation. Nige would have had grounds for this with his employer if he had been well enough to do so. Also talking about a person to another can be defaming to their character e.g. someone states something to the other that isn;t true, verballly or in print, and sets with the intention in mind to hurt someone. This is against the law and legal action can be taken out against the person for committing defamation. Do I personally feel that you have grounds for defamation yes I do. I feel that you could easily lodge a claim in the courts re civil in regards to your situation. Maybe even more than one Hope this helps my dear friend. Always here if you need me Piglitx0

It is very difficult to find a lawyer who will take a defamation case as the 'proving of damages' can be difficult and this is what the lawyers are paid through.
-
piglit May 13, 2012 at 4:10 pm0 Likes
Hi lizzie the defamation is in place and the documentation required is in wrting. I know that if my husband had been well enough that defamation could have been claimed through his employers against the person that was defaming him. It can all go into the one claim. Take care Piglit
